Training
How many sets actually build muscle?
The number people shout in the gym is not the number the research supports. Here is what it looks like for someone training three times a week.
Most lifters do either far too little or far too much, and both look the same from the outside: months without progress.
The usable range is roughly ten to twenty hard sets per muscle group per week. Below ten, you are maintaining. Above twenty, for most people who also have a job and children, recovery becomes the limit rather than effort.
Three sessions a week is enough to hit that range if you train each muscle twice. Two pushing days, two pulling days, two leg days, spread across three sessions.
The part nobody likes: a hard set means two or three reps from failure, not a comfortable stop. If you can talk through it, it did not count.
